Normatec Compression Device

Normatec compression device for legs.

Normatec compression devices are a type of pneumatic compression therapy system. They help with muscle recovery by improving blood circulation in and out of muscles. These devices are popular in the sports and fitness industry, as well as in healthcare settings, for their potential benefits in reducing muscle soreness, swelling, and improving overall recovery.

How They Work:

  • Normatec devices consist of inflatable attachments that are worn on specific areas of the body, such as the legs, arms, or hips.
  • The device uses compressed air to sequentially inflate and deflate these attachments, creating a “massage-like” effect.
  • The sequential compression starts at the far end of the limb and moves towards the body, helping to mobilize fluid and increase circulation.

Benefits:

  • Muscle Recovery: Athletes and active individuals use these devices to aid in muscle recovery after intense workouts or competitions. The compression helps to flush out metabolic waste products, reduce muscle soreness, and speed up the healing process.
  • Edema and Swelling: In healthcare settings, Normatec devices help patients manage conditions that involve edema (swelling). For example, they can treat post-operative swelling or lymphedema.
  • Improved Circulation: These devices can enhance blood flow, which may benefit those with circulatory problems.

Customization:

Normatec systems come with customizable settings. This allows users to adjust the pressure levels and focus areas according to their needs and comfort.

Research and Evidence:

  • Sands et al. (2015) found that 15 minutes of compression therapy with the Normatec device reduced pain levels immediately after the therapy session, as well as hours later after an afternoon training session in Olympic athletes.
  • Gurovich and Braith (2013) found that blood flow in the popliteal artery (at the back of the knee) increased by 402% after a 45-minute session with the Normatec Legs.
  • Martin et al. (2012, 2014, 2015) have shown that the Normatec device improves peripheral conduit (blood flow), resistance artery function, capillary density, and circulating markers of inflammation after a one-hour session with Normatec devices.

Alternatives:

Some athletes also use compression garments (compression socks, sleeves, etc.) as an alternative to achieve similar effects to the Normatec devices. However, Normatec devices provide targeted and sequential compression, which is often considered more effective.

The Normatec Legs, Hips, and Arms attachments are available at our facility for the use of the general public during open hours.  For more information about the devices, please check out the Normatec website. If you would like to come in and use these devices or would like more information, please contact us.
